I. Chapter Summary

This chapter introduces students to the fundamental concepts of trigonometry—a branch of mathematics that deals with relationships between the sides and angles of right-angled triangles. The chapter focuses on defining trigonometric ratios, calculating them for standard angles, understanding complementary angles, and deriving identities that form the basis for advanced trigonometric applications in later classes and real-life fields like engineering, astronomy, and architecture.

II. Key Concepts Covered

Concept Explanation
Right-Angled Triangle A triangle with one angle equal to 90°.
Trigonometric Ratios Ratios of the sides of a right-angled triangle w.r.t. one acute angle:
 $-sin theta = frac{text{Opposite}}{text{Hypotenuse}}$
 $-cos theta = frac{text{Adjacent}}{text{Hypotenuse}}$
 $-tan theta = frac{text{Opposite}}{text{Adjacent}}$
 $-csc theta = frac{1}{sin theta},quad sec theta = frac{1}{cos theta},quad cot theta = frac{1}{tan theta}$
Trigonometric Ratios of Standard Angles Values for angles: 0°, 30°, 45°, 60°, 90° (to be memorized)
Trigonometric Identities
 1. $sin^2 theta + cos^2 theta = 1$
 2. $1 + tan^2 theta = sec^2 theta$
 3. $1 + cot^2 theta = csc^2 theta$
Complementary Angles
 $sin(90^circ – theta) = cos theta$
 $tan(90^circ – theta) = cot theta$

III. Important Questions
